The model is based on a standard airborne disease transmission model calibrated to COVID-19 using published quanta emission research.
This tool does not include close-contact or fomite transmission and assumes the space is well mixed.
Fundamental Concept
This tool models a single event where one infectious person shares a room with susceptible occupants for a defined period.
It uses quanta emission, clean-air removal, viral inactivation, particle deposition, and inhalation rate to estimate individual risk and probable cases.
Calculator Fields
Floor Area and Room Height: Used to calculate room volume.
Clean Airflow: Any virus-free airflow entering or effectively cleaning the space, including outdoor air, filtered recirculation, or air purifiers.
Exposure Time: How long infected and susceptible people share the same environment.
Humidity: Affects viral inactivation.
Number of Susceptible People: The number of people who could be infected, excluding the infectious person.
Pathogen / Activity / Mask Strategy: These inputs change emission and inhalation behavior, which directly affects risk.
Results
Individual Risk: Likelihood that one susceptible person is infected.
Max Occupancy: Maximum susceptible occupancy before an infection becomes likely.
Probable Number of Cases: Expected number of infections during the event.
